Deep Clean Your Kitchen Trash Can

Your dishes are clean, you’ve cleared the clutter and you’ve thought through how to best organize your kitchen. Today we’re getting into the nitty gritty of this Spring Cleaning Challenge. We’re going to start deep cleaning the kitchen!

Day 4 :: Deep clean the kitchen trash can

You use trash bags. You may even have a hands-free trash can. Yet, somehow, there’s always a leak, or a spill, or so much trashed stuffed in the can that last night’s food scraps stick to the top of the lid. The kitchen trash can lined with a trash bag eventually stinks and becomes uber gross and sticky.

Unfortunately, that means it’s time to wash the trash can.

If you’re like me, the thought of cleaning a trash can completely grosses you out. It’s not as bad as cleaning the outdoor garbage can…but it’s close! Here are a few options to make cleaning the kitchen garbage slightly more bearable:

  • If you have a small trash can, you could stick it in the dishwasher.
  • If it’s still warm outside, you could take it out, squirt dishsoap in it and use the sprayer on the garden hose to clean it out. This is my personal favorite since minimal touching is involved.
  • You could try a similar approach in the bathtub or shower, especially if you have a shower head sprayer. It will give you a good excuse to scrub the tub afterwards!
  • The last option is to get an old sponge, scrub brush, or washcloth and just clean it out with your hands. If your trash can is just slightly dirty, this may be the quickest option.
Whichever option you choose, remember to wash both the inside and outside of the trash can. Your garbage can will smell better. which means your kitchen will smell better too.
What’s that you say? You use heavy duty trash bags and your kitchen trash can smells like a bed of roses? Well, good for you. You get the day off!

Action Item:

Deep clean your trash can until it looks – and smells – new!  Then let me over on Facebook or on the comment section here. I can’t wait to cheer you on!
