Cleaning your refrigerator and freezer probably took longer than 15 minutes each so I’m giving you a super easy task today. In fact, this step won’t apply to everyone so many of you will get to take the day off!
Step 8 :: Replace the Water Filter in Your Refrigerator
Alight. Be honest. When was the last time you replaced the water filter in your refrigerator?
The water/ice dispenser in our last refrigerator had an indicator light that alerted us when it needed to be changed (although, you could totally reset it without changing the filter. Not that I would ever do such a thing. Ahem.)
When we moved to a new house, the refrigerator still had a water/ice dispenser in the door but it didn’t have the indicator light. Of course I didn’t really notice until we had been living in our new house for a year and I hadn’t replaced the water filter!
Ding*Ding*Ding* I had to remember to change it by myself!
How often should you replace the water filter in your refrigerator?
Most manufactures recommend replacing water filters every six months. You could check your model to be certain, but depending on your water usage, changing it ever 6 months should be acceptable.
How to remember to replace the water filter in your refrigerator?
You could add this task to your cleaning schedule, add a repeating entry on your calendar, or just change it in in January and July. I lean towards the last option because 1/1 and 7/1 are triggers for me just like changing the air conditioning filter on the first of the month or flipping our mattress when the seasons change. The best option is whichever one helps you remember!
Your task for the day.
If you haven’t replaced your filter in the last six months or so and you happen to have a replacement filter hanging around, then take a couple of minutes today to install the new one. If you don’t have an extra filter, then hop on over to amazon and order one!
So, do you have a water filter in your refrigerator that needs to be replaced? How often do you replace it?

Yay! I get a free pass today! My refrigerator water dispenser is a plastic pitcher from Walmart. :)
Side note: Since my last dental check-up, I have stopped drinking filtered or bottled water. I know it sounds crazy, but I have ANOTHER cavity, and my dentist and hygienist said there has been a BIG increase in cavities in adults because of drinking filtered and bottled water because filtering removes most of the flouride that is added to tap water, and flouride is a naturally occurring element that helps to keep your tooth enamel hard. Who knew! They recommended only drinking unfiltered tap water. Which is just fine on it’s own. So for people like me who are genetically predisposed (that’s my story anyway) to soft enamel, it’s best for your teeth to stick with straight-from-the-tap iced water.
Thus ends today’s science class.
Do fridges that don’t have water dispensers have filters too?
