Going to a “pick your own” farm to stock up on fresh fruit has been on my todo list for a while. I mostly thought it would be a fun learning experience for the kids. But, I also know picking our own local fruit is one of the most econimical ways to stock up on healthy food. That’s music to this frugal girl’s ears!
The thing is, you have to be somewhat flexible when going to a pick your own farm because the timing isnt exactly the same each year. The picking window can be short, so when the fruit is ripe, you have to go!
The benefits are numerous for stocking up on fresh, local fruit. Unfortunately, there’s one small downside: you have to make time to freeze, can, or preserve the fruit almost immediately. If you let the berries sit out too long, mold spores could grow rather quickly.
Thankfully, I learned a little trick from a facebook friend last year that I’ve been waiting nine months to share with you!
How to Keep Berries Fresh Longer and Kill Mold Spores
To keep strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries fresh longer and kill mold spores, drop in 125 degree water for 30 seconds.
To keep blueberries fresh longer and kill mold spores, drop in 140 degree water for 30 seconds.
Don’t worry, this doesn’t cook them, it just delays spoiling!
