Trying to get a job working on a college campus is pretty competitive. My college job started 3 hours before the sunrise and taught me how to clean bathrooms and bathroom tile. I also worked as a janitor for a year and a half after that and learned a lot more about cleaning. I still use a lot of what I learned to clean my own home. The great news is that YOU don’t have to go back to college or get up at 4:30 am in order to learn how to clean grout. Cleaning grout is easy to do. The first thing that you need to do is to decide what type of grout cleaner you’re going to use. The type of grout cleaner that you choose will affect how you are going to clean.
Bleach Water is a Basic Grout Cleaner
The most basic grout cleaner that you can use is simply a solution of bleach water. This works really well for stains that have only come to your grout recently. If you’re going use a bleach water solution to clean your grout lines with, use a solution that contains 10% bleach and 90% water. Put this solution into a spray bottle. Then spray it on your tile and allow it to sit for up to 10 minutes. This will help it to disinfect whatever’s on the surface of the grout It also penetrates to get rid of grout stains and discoloration. You have to be careful when you use bleach. It is best to try it out on a small area of your tile first, just to make sure that it won’t discolor or damage the tile in any way.
Organic Grout Cleaners Are Safe Around Children and Pets
The second type of grout cleaner that you can use is an organic cleaner. It is very simple and easy to make. What you’re going to want to do is, you’re going to want to mix 2 cups of vinegar with 2 cups of water. Then you’re going to want to add a ½ to ¾ cup of baking soda to the mixture. As the baking soda breaks down in the vinegar, it gives off an oxidizing effect. The carbonate (baking soda) is unstable, it reduces into carbon dioxide and water. In the process, oxygen is also released. Oxidation is a great way to help get rid of some tough stains. People like to use this as a cleaner because it is cheap, and safe to use in your home. You can also make a scrubbing paste out of the baking soda, and use a grout brush to go back over the lines. It may take a couple of cleanings before you are able to remove some of the tougher stains.
Commercial Grout Cleaners Give You More Cleaning Power
The third way that you can clean your grout is to use a commercial grout cleaner. A good example of a commercial cleaner that I recommend is called X – 14. It is a great product for people to use that don’t like to do a lot of scrubbing. You just spray it on and come back half an hour later. Just like that, and your grout lines will come out looking spotlessly clean. The only downside to using this cleaner is that you don’t want to use it if your tiles are already old or starting to fall apart. It is a lot stronger than any of the other two cleaners mentioned here. A lot of commercial cleaners will still require you to scrub in order to get the grout clean. Make sure when you’re using a commercial cleaner, that you always wear gloves, and it is a good idea to also wear goggles. Some people think that using harsh chemicals will damage your grout lines. But it actually takes a lot to damage your grout.
Use a Steam Cleaner, Not a Toothbrush!
My favorite way to clean tile and grout is with a steam cleaner. When a professional cleans your grout for you, they don’t use a toothbrush. You shouldn’t have to use a toothbrush either. Most of the time, professionals use a machine that in many ways resembles a steam cleaner. The great news about steam cleaners is that they are very affordable today. You can even buy multipurpose steamers for your home for around $100. The advantage of using a steam cleaner is that it is able to penetrate the porous surface of the grout very easily. Often, you can get rid of stains with a steam cleaner that you can’t get rid of just by scrubbing alone. Steam cleaners use pressurized steam and low-content water vapor to clean with. Because a steam cleaner doesn’t even use chemicals to clean with, you don’t even have to rinse. All you have to do is dry off your tile floor or walls, and you are done!
