For the past couple of days in our 31 Days to Make Cleaning a Habit series we’ve been discussing laundry habits. Today let’s stick close to that topic but focus on our closets.
31 Days to Make Cleaning a Habit – Habit 5
Organize Your Closet Every Time You Look In It
Unless you are an extremely organized person, there’s a good chance your closet gets out of whack every once in a while.
What’s that you say? It’s the norm for you to have a messy closet? Yep, me too…unfortunately!
There is a solution though that’s actually been working wonders for me lately!
You don’t have to spend hours rearranging and cleaning your closet. Of course, you can straighten it up completely if you want a clean start…but there’s a more manageable, time sensitive way to get it organized. That way is to implement this one little habit.
Every time you open your closet doors or walk in your closet, do one thing:
- hang up an item of clothing
- rearrange your clothing to make it more manageable
- straighten up your shoes
- put something that doesn’t fit or look great on you in the giveaway pile
- write down that “missing piece” you need to buy.
It sounds simple enough. But, if we’re not deliberate about making closet organization a habit, it’s one of those ares that can quickly get out of control!
How’s your closet organization? Will you join me in developing the habit of organizing your closet one step at a time?

That’s a great idea! I purged my closet last Spring, but I still have things I don’t need or it just needs to be better organized!
Closet…organizations? Hahahaahaa.
(But this is a good idea)
Yikes! Do I hafta look past the clothes hanging up and actually look down “gasp” or actually behind “double gulp” my clothes?
In all seriousness, this is a habit that would make/brake a cleaning person. Having a mindset to put away/organise one thing beyond what you are doing right now would almost fix the cleaning issue from the get go. You will always go the “extra step” just one mind you, when you see something out of place.
For my closet, this would mean finding the floor IN FRONT OF IT, before I could even reach the closet itself. I just lean over and grab the hanging clothes normally. In my defense, my walkway is only 18″ wide, and the doorway is 24″ for the closet and hubby has his own BIG closet but on the other side of the room. I am the only person going in/out of this closet.
