4 Inexpensive Ways to Disinfect a Toothbrush

in Bathroom, Cleaning Up

As Autumn approaches, it seems more and more people catch a cold or cough. Even when we can take some precautions, they don’t always work. Unfortunately, there are times we have to go into reactive mode.

I sure hope you don’t have to deal with sickness in the upcoming months, but in case you do, here are a few suggestions for getting rid of those sicky germs that can linger on your toothbrush.

Ways to Disinfect a Toothbrush

1. Disinfect a toothbrush in the microwave.

Wet the toothbrush bristles and microwave for one minute.

2. Disinfect a toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide.

Soak bristles in hydrogen peroxide for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly with hot water. (thanks Becca and Tara!)

3. Disinfect a toothbrush with Listerine.

Soak bristles in Listerine for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly with hot water. (thanks Rachel)

4. Disinfect a toothbrush in the dishwasher.

Dishwashers clean and disinfect our dishes so why not our toothbrushes? Just put in the silverware tray and run the dishwasher as usual. (thanks Teri and Casey!)

Of course, you can always just buy a new toothbrush. There are times though – like when you just replaced yours – that you’d rather save a little cash and disinfect.

Hello, we always use those tabs that are meant to be for denture cleaning! I use those for many things like cleaning metal drinking bottles or in the toilet! Easy and quick!

Peroxide if what I use. I like the Listerine idea though!

I use hydrogen peroxide. It works and it’s cheap, too!

Just a little FYI, make sure you are replacing your brush at least every 4-6 months because the bristles truly are not cleaning as effectively any longer. That’s not just a gimmick to get you to buy a new one ;) The tips of the bristles become rough & aren’t working the same. Also if your bristles are flayed, then you NEED a new one! You also need to stop scrubbing with so much pressure.
