2 Easy Ways to Remove Onion Smell From Your Hands

in Kitchen

Sweet onions, red onions, green onions, white onions…they all have a purpose and that purpose usually involves flavoring food.

Although you may like to use onion when cooking, I’m guessing you don’t like the smell lingering on your hands.

Well, here are two easy ways to eliminate onion smell from your hands.

1. Coffee Grounds.

I’ve previously mentioned how a good friend shared that you can easily remove onion smell by rubbing used coffee grounds between your hands when washing them. If you’re a coffee lover like me, then you can appreciate having a good use for recycling your grounds.

2. Baking Soda.

I’ve personally been using the coffee ground tip for months now, but the other day I was in a pinch uses for Baking Soda because I didn’t make my usual morning brew. I was in the middle of washing my hands with regular soap and water when my husband walked by. Having to act quickly, I recalled how it seems that baking soda has 1001 uses. Why not give it a try, I thought. So, I kindly asked my husband to grab the baking soda and pour a bit in my hands. I scrubbed thoroughly with the slightly abrasive baking soda, rinsed and dried. It worked! No more onion smell!

Do you have another tip for removing onion smell from your hands?

I’m a wife. I’m a mom. And I don’t like to clean! With a house full of boys, though, cleaning is inevitable. That's why I've made it my mission to find the best organizing and cleaning tips. Hopefully, those tips will help us spend less time cleaning and more time with the ones we love.

Actually I do! Stainless steel :)

Over here in Germany, you can buy little stainless steel stones that will neutralize just about any sort of smell on your hands, from onions to garlic to chilies. There is a little dish underneath to keep them drained off and they are usually under $10 but last forever. I’d never heard or seen this before moving here.

I imagine if you have a stainless steel sink, you could just rub your hands on that…or maybe a stainless steel soap dispenser or faucet. ;)

Very interesting!! I actually do have a stainless sink so I’m going to try that tip next time to see how well it works. Great tip!

Hello! I came through to post my solution for oniony/garlicky hands and see that Tiffany has the same solution! I’ve always been told that washing with a handwash was never enough, and remember experiencing that myself after cutting up a kilo or two of onions. I remember that I read an article advising washing and drying of hands and then running your hands over a clean stainless steel surface. It works every time, but it has to be steel and not chrome or aluminium.
I’ve seen the stainless steel stones in my homeland, but haven’t managed to track them down here in the middle east.
