Double Duty Disposable Swim Diapers

wash swim diapers [pinit]

Swim diapers are a must for children swimming if they haven’t been potty trained. However, they can really add to the living expenses for a family during the summer. Thankfully, disposable swim diapers can last more than one trip to the pool.

How to Wash Disposable Swim Diapers:

If your child pooped in the swim diaper then definitely throw it away. However, if they didn’t use the bathroom or only urinated, then you can wash the swim diaper using the gentle cycle on your washing machine. Of course you don’t want to wash an entire load for one diaper so throw some other clothes in there as well!

Let the swim diaper air dry.

Then, use it again next time the kiddo goes to the pool. You’ll double or even triple the use of the disposable swim diaper.

Have you ever reused a disposable swim diaper?

I’m a wife. I’m a mom. And I don’t like to clean! With a house full of boys, though, cleaning is inevitable. That's why I've made it my mission to find the best organizing and cleaning tips. Hopefully, those tips will help us spend less time cleaning and more time with the ones we love.

Ummm… I don’t think that I would do this, personally. I know that the “stuff” in disposable swim diapers can clog up pool filters so I would be a little concerned as to what it might do to my washer over time. I would just prefer to buy a reusable swim diaper period. Saves on all the expense of all the disposable and can be used for multiple children in the future. Some places have required both a disposable and a reusable cover.

Great point about the reusable swim diaper. I’m actually a huge fan of those but it’s not always feasible for for every person, every time. So, it’s nice to have an alternative when needed.

There seems to be some debate around the web about whether disposable swim diapers contain material that can clog pool drains. So I went straight to some of the manufacturers websites and also checked consumer reports. Based on that information it appears that the material and gel contained in regular disposable diapers easily swell up and fall apart…that is apparently the material that can clog drains. They all mentioned that disposable swim diapers do not contain that gel so they don’t swell and fall apart.

However, I’m certainly not an expert on how diapers are made and would whole-heartedly agree that if there is any hesitation about using or washing swim diapers to follow your instinct. What I do know about the subject is based on others washing the swim diapers as well as my own experience. When I’ve washed a disposable swim diaper, it comes out of the washer exactly how it went in (except clean!). If there is any wear and tear prior to washing, I wouldn’t put it in the washer.

Of course, when it’s appropriate, I personally like reusable rather than disposable…even for regular diapers!

What? I had no idea. We burned through half a package of these things over Fourth of July weekend!

I’ll definitely be trying this after our next trip to the pool!

Smart idea, but the best idea is to purchase the reusable swim diaper. People do not realize and are always surprised when I tell them that reusable swim diapers are just as good as disposable if not better. Swim instructors actually perfer them because they don’t weigh the child down and are even more sanitary. They are $4 bucks a pair at wal-mart.

I’ve just rinsed them out really well and let them dry. This was great on a trip to the beach when we were in the water constantly.
