We’ve talked about the importance of teaching kids to brush their teeth, but have you ever took the time to determine if you are brushing your own pearly whites correctly?
The busyness of life can often deter us from taking proper care of ourselves. We often focus on taking care of everyone else while putting our needs on the back burner. Well, today let’s take some time to focus on keeping healthy, vibrant teeth by reviewing proper brushing techniques.
Good Oral Hygiene Techniques
Floss. Once a day flossing is recommended by most dental experts but those who actually follow that rule seem to be in the minority (according to my completely unscientific poll). We’re busy people, right? Well, taking the extra minute to floss daily can prevent gum disease, halitosis, and even heart disease. Those benefits far outweigh the time it takes to get the job done.
Use the correct toothbrush. Toothbrushes that have soft or medium bristles are most recommended. Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head ever three months or before if bristles are deformed.
Brush twice a day. Brushing twice a day is the minimum amount you should brush your teeth, but brushing after every meal is ideal.
Brush teeth correctly. The surface of every tooth should be brushed thoroughly, but did you know it’s often easy to neglect the surface closest to the gums. I recently heard someone describe the way they prevent this that changed my thinking permanently. If you focus on brushing the bottom portion of your gums, you inevitably brush the top portion of your teeth (the area that plaque builds up heavily) as well. Try it; you’ll be amazed!

When I remember, and I’m not about to fall over from exhaustion. Also, when I’m on my daily flossing kick, which can last months at a time. :-)
Floss one or two times most days.

I floss kinda sporadically… sometimes I’ll floss every day for a week, sometimes I’ll slack off on it.
