Small Spaces: Increase Storage by Utilizing Height

in organization, small spaces

Living in a “normal” house again has been a major transition. I no longer have to contemplate every purchase to make sure the item will fit and serve a dual purpose. I haven’t had to persuade the grandparents to limit the number of  toys they give. I don’t even have to pass over a great sale on clothes because my closet is too small.

But, I still do all of those things! Living in 740 square feet for almost five years has changed me forever.

There are some habits that I just don’t want to break. And there are some tricks that worked for us in our small loft that will work in any small space.

If you feel like you’ve outgrown your home and need more space, you may be surprised at how much unused space you have. All you have to do is look up!

If your house is too small, utilize the height of the room to create more space.

Increase Storage by Utilizing Height in a Small Space

You’ll be surprised at how much storage you gain when you move closer to the ceiling. A wall-to-wall storage unit like the one pictured above can store toys, books, a TV, and even random things like old annuals, a sewing machine, and car detailing equipment (*ahem*). But, you certainly don’t have to buy an entire piece of furniture to use the height of your room to the fullest. Consider these options to increase storage in a small space:

  • Add another shelf in your closet to store out of season clothes, craft supplies, or even seasonal decorations.
  • Hang a shelve on the wall to hold decorative boxes full of items that just don’t seem to have a better home.
  • Store supplies in a decorate box or magazine holder on top of a bookshelf instead of only on the shelves.

Do you have other suggestions? What ideas do you have to increase storage in a small space?

Very important idea! I have used the space up to the ceiling in several places I’ve lived. One useful space is the top of the refrigerator or wardrobe cabinet; you can put little-used things (like unusual appliances or out-of-season clothes) in a box at the back center and then put other stuff around the reachable edges.

Some friends have a very small apartment where they’ve hung shelves around the top of every room, including hallway, just above the doorframes. They keep all kinds of stuff up there and have a few footstools strategically stashed (like under an end table) so they can easily hop up to get something.
