Easy Way to Clean Grout (Guest Post)

in Bathroom, Cleaning House

First of all, let me just tell you that I am not at all qualified to be guest-blogging on a home cleaning website (and if you saw this, you would be nodding your head in agreement).  But I recently discovered a cleaning “tip” that has literally made me jump for joy!

Since we moved into our “new” house (which is actually an older home) six months ago, I have been battling that black icky stuff on the grout in our shower.  Our previous home had fiberglass combination tubs, so this grout issue was a new and perplexing problem.  I literally tried everything to clean it…but it made no difference.

About a month ago, I saw a suggestion in a magazine to dip a cotton ball into bleach and then put it at the corners of  bathtubs (where the tile meets the tub) to keep from getting bacteria, mold and mildew in there.  I thought this sounded like a great idea…but it would take A LOT of cotton balls to cover the entire area where the shower floor meets the tile.  But, then I remembered the perms I had in the early 90′s…and the long cotton strands that wrapped around my head after dousing my hair with perm solution.

So, I ventured to our local beauty supply and got a ten foot “beauty coil” package (for around $2.00).  I soaked it in bleach for a few minutes and then lined the bottom of the shower floor with it, making sure to push the cotton up to the grout.  I left it on overnight.

Much to my delight, every speck of the black nastiness on my grout was GONE!  I seriously wish I would have taken “before” and “after” pictures, but then again…it might have totally grossed you out!

Hopefully this little tip will help many who suffered far too long with black yucky stuff on their grout!

Sitting in my house with a bunch of stretched out cotton balls all around our tub on the grout line. :) Hoping it comes clean tomorrow but man, oh man, the smell of the bleach! UGH! I’m hoping it’s safe and that it’s just literally in my nose and not in my entire house. Everywhere I go I smell swimming pool on a really chlorinated day. LOL. I’m thinking next time I do this, I do it when we’re going to be gone overnight and then air it out!
