Quick Tip: Reduce Your Electric Bill by Thinking Ahead

Laundry is one of my least favorite cleaning activities to do around the house. And I think some of you share my sentiments since in a recent iDreamofClean poll laundry came in a close second to toilets!

For the first few years of marriage laundry day was one day a week. That meant that I spent a ton of time folding clothes! I’ve since changed my ways and determined that doing one load of laundry works best for my schedule. Every morning I pop a load in the washer and then eat breakfast with my little one. After breakfast I put the clothes in the dryer and get ready for the day. For the most part, it’s become a habit.

However, there are some days I forget about the wet clothes sitting in the washer. On those days the thought of laundry usually doesn’t enter my brain again until sometime between the hours of Noon and 5:00pm…the absolute hottest part of the day in the summer! The last thing I want to do is start the dryer and make the air conditioner go into overdrive.

That got me thinking…

In order to reduce the electric bill (or at least help it not skyrocket) I’ve been contemplating the best time to use the dryer.

  • In the summer, it’s best to use it in the coolest part of the day or night. For those who have a laundry area in a remote part of the house, it may be beneficial to begin drying clothes at bedtime…that is, if you don’t mind wrinkled clothes in the morning!
  • In the winter, drying clothes when you’re the coldest or when the most people are home could help the heater run less often.

Do you think about your electric bill when running the dryer? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

I’m a wife. I’m a mom. And I don’t like to clean! With a house full of boys, though, cleaning is inevitable. That's why I've made it my mission to find the best organizing and cleaning tips. Hopefully, those tips will help us spend less time cleaning and more time with the ones we love.

Most definitely I think about this in the summer. In the winter, not so much because I want it to heat up my house. But in the summer (and spring and fall – and any nice day in winter), I use a clothesline outside to dry as much as possible. I don’t want to heat up my house by using the dryer – it saves the electric bill double by not using electricity to run the dryer and also by not making the air conditioner work harder.

I definitely think about this… I use a clothesline as much as possible. We also have a drying rack inside that has a nearly permanent home. But when it must run, I reached the same conclusion as you. Overnight/early morning in summer & after work (or early am on weekends) in the summer to help ward off the chill…

Unfortunately our washer and dryer are in our master bathroom so that rules out late night drying. We do try to run a load through early in the morning and another right before we go to bed! Sometimes, we do laundry whenever we find a spare time. It may cost a little more or make our house a little warmer, but clean clothes win out every time! :-)
