Serve Watermelon Without a Mess

in Kitchen

You’ve probably seen those cute fruit baskets made out of a watermelon and filled with melon balls and berries. You may have even made one yourself! Well, using the same approach to serving watermelon in an every day setting is easier than you may think. It’s not as beautiful as the basket, but it serves its purpose and keeps your watermelon fresh longer. Here’s how:

1. Using a knife, cut a “lid” out of the top of the watermelon much like you would when carving a pumpkin. Angle your knife in so that the outer part of the rind is larger than the inner portion so the lid will stay secure when placed back on the watermelon.

2. Remove the lid.

3. Scoop out the fruit to serve using an ice cream scoop or spoon.

4. Replace the lid securely and place in the refrigerator for later.

You won’t have to clean additional storage containers and the watermelon should stay fresh longer than if you cut it up completely. Plus it’s loads of fun for the kids!

Have you ever used this approach for serving watermelon?

That’s pretty clever. We don’t eat watermelon very often. Next time we get one I might try this if I think about it. Thanks for sharing!

What a nifty idea!

I just did a watermelon post a few weeks ago: http://www.crystalandcomp.com/2010/06/less-messy-way-to-cut-watermelon.html

I will have to try this as well!

Now THAT is a fabulous idea! I believe I’m going to file that away for our next cookout. Sticky-free watermelon! I never thought it was possible!

Wow! That should save a lot of trouble, and the kids will love having the watermelon in a different shape.

What do you do about the juice that collects in the cavity? (At least, I think it will; I never tried it, but I always get juice when I cut up a watermelon.)

PS This would be a perfect tip for Tightwad Tuesday.

What a great idea! I remember, as a child, helping my mom carve a watermelon into a whale and filling it with all sorts of melon balls… that’s a fun memory. :) But me? I usually just chop it up into a bunch of cubes and create a huge watery mess on my cutting board. Love the idea of fun balls of melon though!

That’s a brilliant idea. I hate having to cut up the entire watermelon but I want it to stay fresh. Thanks for sharing this!
