I remember thinking I’d never drink coffee. Coffee breath is…how shall I put it…not pleasant. And the taste…less than desirable.
Then something happened.
I began working. This night owl had to be bright eyed and ready to work hard at 7:00 a.m. So, I learned how to add lots of sugar and flavored cream to turn it into more of a dessert than a drink.
Fast forward several years. I’m now a coffee-a-holic. There, I said it. I drink coffee every. single. day.
Well, when I found out coffee grounds could be used for another purpose, I was ecstatic that my daily addiction could be used for good!
Coffee grounds can be used as a deodorizer
Used coffee grounds can be used much like baking soda since the grounds attract and trap unwanted odors. To use, just let the coffee grounds dry out, put them in a plastic container, and poke holes in the lid. You can then put the container in the refrigerator or freezer just like you would baking soda.
I even put coffee grounds in the kitchen trash can last week while I was out of town. When I came back, the trash can was odorless. Of course, I’m sure not having trash in it for a week helped too!

Too funny!! I guess it makes sense though – it has always smelled good to me, but I never acquired the taste:)
Oh, yeah. I’ve always loved the smell too. Somehow the taste just didn’t matter when I was transitioning from college to the working world : )
I have used coffee grounds in my trashcan too. :) I have a hard time using it as much as I would use baking soda b/c it’s a bit more expensive. I also use used coffee grounds in my compost! :)

So glad I’m not the only one to use them in the trash can! Using them in compost is a great idea. Would love to know more about that.
Man, now I love coffee even more! :) I’ll have to try that out with tomorrow pot of grinds.

Isn’t it nice to have another reason to drink coffee?!
I used to work in a restaurant where I handled onions all day long. The smell did NOT come off hands. We used to rub our hands with coffee grinds and then wash them. It was the only thing that got the smell out.
That’s a GREAT suggestion. I’m going try that next time I cut up onions…which may actually be today!

Grandma always said coffee grounds are great for plants that like acidic soil. Adding them to the soil around a hyacinth bush will actually change the color of the flowers.

You can mix them with sugar or coarse salt and sew a bag from a small washcloth. Stuff it with the coffee mixture and use it in the shower as an invigorating scrubbie.

Usually you can get a big sack of used coffee grounds from Starbucks or a local coffee shop for free. My local Starbucks keeps a big bag by the counter and it’s available first come first serve. A big bag is great for fertilizing the garden.
