When my husband and I first moved into our home, we liked the wall color and didn’t feel the need to repaint. Over time the walls became increasingly filled with scuff marks, so we decided it was finally time to retouch the paint.
The painting part was quick and easy; determining the actual color of paint used on our walls…now that was quite a challenge. T
Hunting down the details for our painting project took quite a bit of time, so I decided we needed to find a way to remember the colors and give the information to future homeowners should they need it.
Ways to Remember Paint Colors Used in Your Home
Paint Can Lids – By keeping the lids to your paint cans, a paint store can always use them later to match the color exactly. The downside is that they do take up space and can easily be lost.
Paint Stirrers – A paint store can always match paint color from a paint stirrer just like the paint can lid but this option has the same downside as well.
Back of the Light Switch Plate – This is my favorite solution for a homeowners to record wall paint colors! Just paint a color swatch on the back of the light switch plate in each room. If the color is ever needed again, you can remove the light switch and take it to the paint store to get a color match. You can also write the brand, color, and gallons needed for the room on the back of the light switch plate.
If you have another type of wall covering (like wallpaper) in the room, you can write the brand, name, etc. and even the number of rolls it took to cover the walls.
Recording specifics on the pack of the light switch plate is my favorite option out of the three because it doesn’t take additional storage space and the information is readily available for future homeowners!
Do you have a system in place for keeping track of household information like paint colors?

Our local paint center has a tool that they will check out. You hold it against the wall color you are trying to match, click a button, and it tells you the name of the color (match to the brand of paint that this store sells). It’s very quick and easy. Take the tool back to the store with the color name and they can mix your paint to match.
Great Ideas! I always need to remember what paint colors I use. :)

When we built our house and painted every room, I kept (and still do) the paint cards shown in your photo above, in my purse. That way I always have the color handy when trying to find accessories or other things for our home and I can make sure they match. Keeping them in my purse guarantees that I have the right color and am not just guessing, cutting down on returns to the store because the color wasn’t quite right.
To cut down on the bulkiness of the cards in my purse, I cut off just the color we actually used and write on the back which room we used it in and keep them all in a small envelope tucked away in one of my purse pockets…Works for Me!!!
