Prevent Clogs in the Bathroom Drain

in Bathroom

Do you get frustrated when your bathroom drain clogs over and over again?  If you’re like me one clogged drain is one too many!

For someone who’d rather spend time playing with the kiddos than trying to figure out how to use that drain snake (gross!), here’s a quick tip you can try to prevent clogs in your bathroom drain.

The average woman loses 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. Yes, you read that correctly. 50-100 strands. That makes hair the most likely culprit of a clogged drain. If even half that amount actually makes it down the bathroom pipes, the potential for a clogged drain is huge. So, to prevent clogged drains in the bathroom, we need to find a way to minimize the amount of hair making it down the drain. Makes sense, right?

To prevent hair buildup in your drain, try this simple trick:

Anyone in your family who has long hair (consider your hair “long” if it’s longer than an inch!) should brush their hair immediately before showering or taking a bath. That way the majority of the loose hair is caught in the brush rather than getting stuck in the drain.

How’s that for an easy and inexpensive way to keep the shower drain clog free?

I’m the only one with long hair now (my daughter has moved out and my others are young men–even my husband, who is also ‘young’) but I’m always cleaning hair out of the drain trap of the shower or our sink. I’ll definitely try this idea, it’s a good one!

I’ve had long hair for oh, 20 years or so. :>) Even with brushing my hair before washing, I still lose quite a bit. I keep an empty conditioner bottle in the shower, and after washing and conditioning and getting the loose ones out, I use my toes to pull the hair out of the drain and stuff it in the bottle. Since I’m still in the shower, it seems less yucky. I have waffled on posting about that for Frugal Fridays or Works for Me Wednesdays thinking it might be kinda gross. :>) Thanks for sharing!

I wish I would have thought of that! Even though I’m preggers, I am still losing loads of hair and it makes a LOVELY clump (in the trash) every day, but I’m sure it gets down the sink, too! Great tip!

Another great trick to catch those locks that do escape the comb…use a piece of old or left over screen (yes from the window) cover the edges with tape Or ideally putty and place it over the opening of shower or tub. You’ll be amazed at how much you prevent from “going down the drain”.

Haha, I already do that and I was thinking “Hmmm, I think I’ve only had one sink clog in the 4 years I’ve been in my home….” before I read the suggestion.

There’s a neat little plumbing device that prevents clogged bath sink and tub drains called the Clog Catcher. It’s a green alternative to caustic drain cleaners, stops the use of cumbersome and disgusting drain snakes, and limits those expensive calls to the plumber. Plus, it “catches” any precious items like jewelry and contact lenses from slipping down the drain.
